The Island of St. Kitts

St. Kitts lies in the north-eastern Caribbean, close to the islands of St. Martin, St. Barts and Antigua.  The airport accommodates international jet service, with commercial passenger flights available through several carriers.  The island contains 68 square miles of unspoiled natural charm, with all of the amenities of a resort destination.  The recently-completed four-star St. Kitts Marriott Resort and The Royal Beach Casino offers a pampering full-sevice spa, 4 restaurants, exclusive shops and a variety of different pool experiences.    Ottley’s Plantation Inn has been described as “one of the most charming plantation house inns anywhere in the world,” and sits amidst 35 acres of manicured lawns and lush tropical gardens.  It is also home to “The Royal Palm,” an award-winning gourmet restaurant nestled in stone ruins.  The south-east peninsula of the island is relatively undeveloped, but a number of hotels are vying for the real estate to create new resorts.

As you approach by plane, you can see high volcanic peaks covered with thick green forests (including pristine rain forests), surrounded below by sugar cane and other agricultural lands.  The highest peak is Mount Liamuiga, which reaches to 3792 feet.   There are hiking and mountain biking trails and guided tours to explore the rain forests and mountain regions.  St. Kitts has a rich history as a French and British colony, hosting the “Gibraltar of the Caribbean” - the massive fortress of Brimstone Hill on the west coast of the island.  One can tour the grounds and buildings of this World Heritage site, and learn about the island’s cultural, military, and political history.

There are miles of beautiful beaches to choose from, most offering privacy and seclusion, while others offer bars and restaurants which provide the opportunity to quench your thirst, satisfy your appetite and socialize with other island visitors.  For scuba divers, there are fascinating wrecks, diverse marine life and colorful reef formations to explore.  The capital city of Basseterre and its new deep-water port welcome cruise ships from around the world.  Visitors can shop and dine in the new waterfront area, Porte Zante, or in downtown Basseterre.  Many attractions can be found on the St. Kitts Road and Town Map.
